TORONTO, Ont. – The mystery artist behind the statues in the Humber River near the Old Mill has been solved.
According to the Toronto Star, they are the work of photographer Peter Riedel.
Thirty-nine Inukshuk-like sculptures were built in the shallow section of the river, north of the Old Mill.
The 48-year-old artist said it was thrilling to see the structures featured in the Star’s story Tuesday morning.
Riedel said he didn’t do the work at night, but waded into the Humber River Sunday afternoon and balanced rocks for four hours.
People who live in the area thought it was the work of engineering students or anonymous urban artists.
The sculptures are a bit of a local legend. Residents said they appear in the river every year.
