TORONTO – Toronto police suspended their search Thursday afternoon for a man in his 20s who was swept into the Humber River.

Police said they will re-evaluate Friday.

Crews were called to Lawrence Ave West near Old Mill Road around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Toronto police had initially told 680News that a body was found by the Humber River, but didn’t confirm if he’s the man who was swept into the river.

However, 680News reporter Carl Hanstke confirmed a body was not found. Hanstke said a man called to report what he thought was a body because he saw what looked to be a shoe in the water.

Several emergency workers searched the area extensively on Wednesday. Rescue boats were brought in and a rope was strung along the river to aid in the search.

A witness said she saw the man jump in the river after his dog fell into the water.

Platoon chief Jim Slobodian said Wednesday that a dog was rescued safely, but the section of river where the man fell in was difficult to search.
